Description
Give your BMW X5 the extra front visibility it needs in tight spaces with this front parking sensor retrofit. Larger SUVs like the X5 can make it difficult to judge how close the front bumper is to walls, bollards, or high kerbs. This system solves that by adding ultrasonic sensors and simple audible alerts, so you always know exactly how much room you have left.
Instead of relying solely on your mirrors and guesswork, you can switch the dash-mounted activation switch whenever you’re manoeuvring at low speeds. The system then monitors the space in front of your vehicle and warns you as you move closer to obstacles. Because the sensors integrate neatly into the front bumper and are colour coded, the upgrade looks right at home on a premium BMW.
How It Works
This retrofit uses a set of ultrasonic sensors fitted into the front bumper, all controlled by a discreet switch mounted on the dashboard.
Here’s how it operates in everyday use:
-
Press the activation switch on the dash when you’re about to park or creep forward in a tight space.
-
The sensors immediately begin scanning the area in front of your X5 and send distance data to the control module.
-
As you move towards an object:
-
At a safe distance, you hear slow, intermittent beeps.
-
As the space narrows, the beeps become more frequent, helping you judge the remaining gap.
-
When you get very close, the tone changes to a rapid or continuous beep, warning you to stop.
-
When you finish manoeuvring, you can simply switch the system off again. This gives you full control—front assistance when you need it, silence when you don’t.

FAQs
Q: How do I turn the front sensors on and off?
A: You control the system using a dedicated activation switch on the dash. Press it when you need front assistance and press it again to turn the system off.
Q: Do the sensors come on automatically at low speeds?
A: No. This configuration uses manual activation via the dash switch, giving you full control over when the system runs.
Q: Are the sensors visible on the bumper?
A: The sensors are compact and sit flush in the bumper. They are colour coded to match your X5, so they remain discreet.
Q: Does this system add a visual display?
A: No. This kit provides audible warnings only, which keeps the installation simple and the interior uncluttered.
Q: Will this interfere with my existing BMW electronics or parking systems?
A: When installed correctly, it operates as a standalone assist system and works alongside your existing factory features.
Q: Can I add this if I already have rear parking sensors or a camera?
A: Yes. Front sensors complement rear sensors and cameras very well, giving you more complete parking assistance.
”Integrated Automotive Electronics Solutions”
Integration
When dealing with automotive electronics products, it is important to maintain the original characteristics and functionality of each vehicle, and that safety and aesthetic aspects are not compromised in any way. At Autofidelity, we call this integration. This solution is available for BMW vehicles. For more integrated solutions, check out our BMW solutions page.
Expertise
Autofidelity is renowned for employing the highest quality techniques and technicians, using the highest quality standards in the automotive electronics industry.
Most people can be forgiven for thinking that all parking sensor systems are equal, but are they?
It is important that every aspect of an installation of a Park Distance Control System meets the highest standards to ensure that the product operates for years to come, and doesn’t detract from the visual appeal of your BMW, however there are many aspects that are often not considered. Here are some examples:
Colour Coding
The process of colour coding each sensor is not unlike the process used to paint your car. This is essential if the sensors are expected to retain the same standard of finish as your car for years to come.
Each sensor is prepared for painting using a special abrasive material, then cleaned and masked. The sensors are then inserted into a specialized painting jig ready for painting.
Paint colours are mixed according to manufacturer paint code and specifications using the Glasurit painting system to ensure a perfect colour match every time.
Each sensor is painted with 3 base coats and then 2 clear coats. The sensors are then baked in a professional, purpose built paint finishing oven.
Wiring
Unfortunately, it is often the things that we don’t see that can make a difference. Inferior quality or poorly installed wiring can cause thousands of dollars in damage in extreme cases. In minor cases, wiring can even cause annoying rattles. Our systems are supplied with wiring harnesses which are wrapped in fabric insulation, conforming as closely as possible to the wiring standards set by the manufacturer and ensuring that there are no annoying rattles
Warranty
This product comes with a minimum of 12 month manufacturers warranty and if installed by Autofidelity Australia we offer a lifetime warranty on our installation.
Diagnostics Check
As a standard part of our installation process we carry out a pre-installation and post-installation diagnostic check on your vehicle. This allows us to ensure we do not incorrectly code or leave any components unplugged in your car. As an added bonus if there any existing faults in the vehicle we can identify and advise where it is. Having your vehicle properly diagnosed is a vital step when fixing faults to help reduce the chances of big unnecessary repair bills. If you are not having an installation done we can offer this service for a flat fee of $165 to perform the diagnostic check.
